[Review]: ‘Finding Dory’ on Blu-Ray is a Stunning Masterpiece

This week, Disney and Pixar’s latest animated masterpiece, Finding Dory finally swims onto Blu-Ray Combo Pack, and Digital HD, allowing fans the opportunity to finally re-watch the film over and over again without paying the movie-theater fee , which if you are like us, would explain what happened to all your money over the summer. The brilliant follow up to Pixar’s even more brilliant predecessor Finding Nemo, pushes Pixar’s ambition once again and offers the perfect return to the franchise that long-time fans of the Nemo franchise have been waiting for.

Image Quality, Main Menu and Packaging

It’s been thirteen years since Finding Nemo, was released in theaters and technology has come a long way in that time, and its advancements have helped Finding Dory become yet another stunning Pixar film, following the legacy of the studio and of the film series. The film looks absolutely stunning on its Blu-Ray treatment, and it’s bonus feature content is filled to the brim with spectacular bonus features to go along with a fantastic film. This jam packed release comes with over two-hours of bonus features to be found, and although some of that is a mixed bag, there’s plenty to make Finding Dory a worthwhile purchase.

The Bonus Features

Some of the best to be found within this Blu-Ray package are a supply of great bonus features, including the theatrical short, Piper, which played before the film in theaters. Alongside that is a fun, yet awfully short bonus called Marine Life Interviews, which is a fun short which interviews the members of the Marine Life Institute which Dory journeys to find her parents. Though this short is clever and hilarious, it runs just under two-minutes, but it’s filled with hilarity throughout. Moving into the behind-the-scenes content is a feature called The Octopus That Nearly Broke Pixar which is an in-depth dive (pun intended) into the technical aspect of creating the film’s most complex creation yet, Hank the Octopus Septopus. Hank’s movement are characteristics, as well as his ability to camouflage posed the biggest challenge that Pixar has ever faced, and the crew explains the creation behind Hank and how his difficulty almost put the film on edge.

The Blu-Ray disc continues to pack great information and entertainment throughout with more behind-the-scenes features like What Were We Talking About? which highlights the struggle the writers had in creating a plot in which the main character instantly forgets what she is striving to do. There’s also Animation and Acting, which showcases how both the writers and the voice actors bring their own originality to bring the characters to life within the film, and Dory’s Theme with composer Andrew Thomas discussing the creation of the music in the movie. There’s also a fun little odd video, Casual Carpool starring Andrew Stanton and the cast of the film on their way to work. It’s odd and pointless, but it’s full of laughs.

The Blu-Ray hits some low points with some features though, like the feature Skating & Sketching with Jason Deamer, which although is full of creativity, fails to really share any insight behind the creation of the characters. There’s also Deep in the Kelp, which is another shoehorned “Disney Channel tween star explains cool facts” with Jenny Ortega from Stuck in the Middle explaining some neat facts about the types of fish found in Finding Dory.

Despite some of the low points in this disc, this disc rounds up an endless amount of other great features, not to mention a wide array of brilliant Deleted Scenes (including one fully animated deleted sequence), a fantastic audio commentary, and an array of other miscellaneous features.

Final Thoughts:

Finding Dory truly packs a brilliant behind-the-scenes look at a brilliant movie. Fans of the film and Pixar in general will be amazed to watch the process of putting this film together and getting a look at the film that might have been in the Deleted Scenes, some of which are a total shame that got cut. There’s an endless supply of great content to be found within this Blu-Ray package that’s sure to excite any Pixar fan and shares an endless amount of insight and entertainment throughout.
